High Line NYC
The High Line is a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Founded in 1999 by community residents, Friends of the High Line fought for the High Line’s preservation and transformation at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. The species of plant life on the High Line were chosen for their hardiness, sustainability and variation, with a focus on native species. |

Riverwalk San Antonio
The San Antonio Riverwalk takes a formerly working riverfront that had fallen into disuse and makes it easy to access. What began as a WPA flood-control project is now a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River, one story beneath approximately 5 miles of downtown San Antonio. Cafés, specialty shops, hotels, and musical nightlife abound while the natural river comes through. The Paseo del Rio Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1968 to promote, protect and preserve the San Antonio River Walk. |

It is built on the former site of SNR-300, a nuclear power plant that never went online because of construction problems and protests. The High Trestle Trail
The 25-mile long High Trestle Trail in Iowa is named after a 1/2 mile-long, 13-story high bridge across the Des Moines river valley. The land access and concrete piers for the bridge were sold by the Union Pacific Railroad to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in 2005, but the steel I-beams of the bridge were removed by the railroad for reuse elsewhere. With determination, time, and effort, INHF was able to raise enough funds to design and construct a new bridge to top the concrete piers, resulting in an incredible public trail and integrated art piece. |
