Yesterday, the Community Foundation of Marquette County gave Friends of Ore Dock BotEco Center a grant of $2000 to help BotEco achieve its goals. A news article about the event can be read HERE.
Starting the new year off on the right foot!
Huge news for the Ore Dock BotEco Center – The changes to the Bottomlands Agreement have been accepted by both the City of Marquette and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality! Come join the Friends of the BotEco Center at our UP 200 volunteer road crossing this year!
The City of Marquette and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) have completed another major step in the process of revising the Great Lakes Bottomlands Use Agreement (AS-109). Once changes have been completed and signed within this agreement, BotEco will be able to begin the next phase of its vision.
A recent article in The Mining Journal highlighted BotEco's progress towards repurposing the Lower Harbor ore dock by transforming it into a community center.
You can read the entire article HERE. A big thank you to Alex Mariano, an NMU student who did his undergraduate presentation on bird-friendly glass options for the BotEco Center!
He did a lot of research on the different solutions to avoid bird collisions on the enclosed design. He presented to our board at our monthly meeting last night and we were all very impressed. The Friends of the Ore Dock BotEco Center invites Michigan Upper Peninsula artists to submit images suitable for an Adult Coloring Book. Submissions shall encompass one or more of the following:
1) Ore Dock BotEco Center as depicted by renderings found at http://oredockboteco.org/ 2) The current Marquette Lower Harbor Ore Dock and its surroundings (e.g. seagulls, waves, boats, sunrise). 3) Views inside the Ore Dock (e.g. plants, concerts, art displays) that reflects people’s interaction with the future ODBEC. Marquette was just featured in the December issue of the Delta Sky Magazine, and BotEco was mentioned as well!
